Dear Pastors, Supporters, Prayer Warriors, and AFBM Friends, We would like to thank you for your prayers and support. Without you, it would be impossible to reach our mission field for Christ. In this letter we will highlight three servicemen centers.
On top of this document in the header you will see a picture of recently bound and boxed Bibles heading for Afghanistan and soldiers preparing for oversea’s service. Thank the Lord for His incorruptible seed.Feel free to contact us at anytime with any questions you may have. On behalf of our AFBM family, we remain your servants for Christ,
The Mahaney Family
Missionary/Director
Servicemen Center, Barksdale Air
Force Base, LA
2 years on the field

God has given us a unique opportunity to build a Servicemen’s Center for the 11,000 Airmen stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base; literally right in our back yard here in Bossier City, LA. This vision started coming to fruition in June of 2010 when the building arrived from Ohio on a flatbed semi-truck. We spent the next year and a half finishing the inside of the building. During that time several Airmen have had the chance to help in the construction of the building and more importantly to hear the Gospel.

While the building was under construction, my wife, Suzi, & I started the ministry in our home. Suzi started a ladies Bible study and I started Men’sScripture Memorization. It was through that ladies Bible study that she had the opportunity to lead our first convert to
the Lord! AMEN!

We will have an “open house” and dedication of the ServiceMen’s Center on 20 May, 2012. We look forward to ministering to the many Airmen that will
come through the doors of the ServiceMen’s Center. II Timothy 2:2B says: “…the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

The Trautman Family
Missionary/Director
Servicemen Center, Edwards Air
Force Base, CA
5 years on the field

Our family thanks God to have a ministry to our military community at Edwards Air Force Base.

I am the Servicemen Center Director and the Assistant Pastor at Victory Baptist Church; an AFBM church plant.

Also, I am blessed with the privilege of serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in aircraft maintenance at March Air Reserve Base. My wife, Stephanie, serves the church as pianist, Sunday school teacher, and AWANA leader.

Our primary responsibility is outreach to the military in our community and on the base. The Lord has worked it out that I can have Bible studies at both bases. At the Bible study at the EAFB we’re going through a study of God’s plan for the end times. At MARB, my supervisor allows me to announce the Bible study at roll call to our troops and as long as I conduct the study at lunch time, they give me full reign as to what is studied and how it is studied! Praise God! This occurs every month when I go to fulfill my reserve commitment.

We are truly blessed to have been given this wonderful ministry to our military in Southern California! John 15:13 states: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

The Martinez Family
Missionary/Director
Servicemen Center, Fort Gordon,
GA
12 years on the field

We have served as Missionaries to the U.S. Military since 1999. Steve is a Purple Heart Recipient and a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran.

We directed a Serviceman Center ministryin the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia area for 9 years, where we saw many saved and some surrender their lives to ministry.

The focus of our ministry has always been the salvation of our heroes; the encouragement and training of Christians in uniform; and being a help the local church and pastor in the community near military bases. We love to assist them in reaching this important group of people. Also, we minister to veterans in the area as well.

We are currently serving the Lord at Fort Gordon, GA. The Lord has abundantly blessed this outreach. In the past 3 years here we have seen over 150 soldiers trust Christ as their Savior and countless souls rededicate their hearts to God. This ministry has evolved into a unique and fruitful outreach.

Your prayers and support for this ministry are appreciated! To God be the Glory, great things HE has done! Galatians 2:20: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…”

Dear Pastors, Prayer Warriors, and AFBM Friends, Thank you so much for you prayers, love, and support. Each of you make a profound difference in our lives and are examples of our Lord’s love. Every month the Lord blesses us with testimonies from folks we minister to. Recently, I received this note from a pastor and would like to share it with you: “There is a lady in the church who has witnessed to her friend for years, to no avail. Her son came back from a tour in Afghanistan a saved man, carrying a bible that our church Grace Baptist and AFBM sent over. Someone there witnessed to him and gave him a Bible. He came home saved.” Folks, we’ll never know on this side of eternity how many lives have been touched and changed through our shared ministry; but God does!
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” ~ Jeremiah 33:3Perhaps Missionary William Carey had this verse in mind when he penned the words: “Expect great things from God and attempt great things for God.” As your missionary and with your prayers, I do expect great things from God and daily attempt great things for God. Here is a sample list (praises) from the past two months on how the Lord continues to exceed our expectations:

Twelve people saved during preaching and eight during face to face visitation.

Recruited and accepted another missionary family.

Shipped two-thousand pieces of Scripture.

Wrote a Veteran’s Hospital lesson plan for evangelizing our lost heroes.

Trained twelve pastors on military missions.

Trained two missionary families in Deputation 101.

Preached a Bible Conference where seven thousand whole Bibles and forty-thousand John and Romans where assembled and bound. We’re so thankful for this Scripture for our military heroes.

Sought and received approval from the V.A. to begin working on a biblical alternative to a PTSD treatment. Essentially, veterans who seek a Christian solution will be referred to us. When completed, this curriculum will be sent to Independent Baptist Churches close to V.A. hospitals to counsel the patient.

Sent Bible studies to a Chaplain in Afghanistan.

Met two soldiers who were saved after reading my Final Orders tract.

More Prayer praises:

Daniel is graduating from Sweethaven Christian Academy on June 1, 2012. We’re so thankful for the folks at Sweethaven Baptist Church and Academy.

Doug II has completed his Junior year of college.

Debbie has had her surgery and is doing great.

For our supporters and their ministries.

For the new missionary family.

For souls saved.

For the Scriptures donated.

Our home church, Good News Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA turned forty-years old on April 16th.

For more than 750,000 pieces of Scripture shipped to our military heroes in the past five years.

Prayer Requests:

For Christ to have the preeminence in all we do.

For our military, veterans, and families who need to be saved.

For new support to replace lost.

For our health.

For the Lord to guide me as I lead missionaries and my family.

For a new binding machine used in the process of binding Bibles. The current one we use is fifty years old and at times failing. If you know a church or former ministry that has one they are no longer using please let us know.

For more churches to have an AFBM Bible Conference or military themed missions conference.

For Doug II and Daniel to stay in the will of God.

For shocks and struts on our ministry vehicle.

For continued dental work.

For the families and friends of the 6,500 war dead and that the Lord would use the loss for His glory.

For the more than 300,000 veterans and families suffering from PTSD.

For a board of Biblical Counselors and pastors to help compile a curriculum to reach our PTSD victims. Our guide will be the Bible and knowing the only emotion greater than fear is hope. Christ alone provides the hope needed for our veterans.

Thank you again for your prayers, love, and support. You’re our heroes in Christ,
Doug, Debbie, Doug II and Daniel

Dear Pastors, Supporters, Prayer Warriors, and AFBM Friends,

All of us at AFBM would like to thank you for your prayers and support. The Lord uses all of you to reach our mission field for Christ.

In this prayer letter we would like to highlight three church plants that are at different stages. In our next letter, we will concentrate on a few of our servicemen centers. Feel free to contact us at anytime with any questions you may have.

On behalf of our AFBM family, we remain your servants for Christ,

The Gorman Family
Missionary/Church Planters
One year on deputation
afbmissions.org/gorman

Our faith has grown by leaps and bounds since we have started deputation. On February 11th, it will be one year since we left our home and started traveling full-time on deputation. We have been strengthened and encouraged by witnessing what God is doing for us.

When I resigned from my position as assistant pastor to begin traveling fulltime, I had no idea how our family’s needs would be met. It was a true step of faith. Since that time, God has wonderfully provided for our day to day needs as well as for our traveling expenses through His people. God has proved His faithfulness to us in many ways.

He has blessed us with 52 percent of our support! We have received valuable advice and hands-on experience from seasoned pastors at over 90 churches which God is using to prepare us for our church plant at Fort Dix. We praise the Lord for His faithfulness! Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.”

The Marshall Family
Missionary/Church Planters
Two year plus church plant
NorthPointBC.org

It has been a wonderfully challenging time planting North Point Baptist Church in a time of war and financial downturns. We are again rediscovering that God is still on the throne even with hard areas of military church planting near training bases.

Great Lakes is the only basic training camp for the Navy. It is called the “Quarterdeck of the Navy” as this is where entry or access to the Navy life begins. Recruits are off limits for off base ministries like ours. These sailors then are easier to access after they graduate and are attending “A” school. For their safety off base they are required to travel in groups. When our people meet them and invite them to church ones who are interested cannot leave the group making it somewhat difficult to get them there. We are working on a way to schedule with them ahead of time.

We share a building with a Messianic Jewish Synagogue. They use it Saturdays and Thursdays and we use it Sundays, Wednesdays and every other Monday for a women’s Bible study.

The key, we have learned, is patience and persistence to establish this church in such a challenging area. We believe we are well on our way. Col. 1:18

The Cooke Family
Missionary/Church Planters
Three years in April church plant
EIBCWidefield.org

Since we opened our doors, we have grown to 11 families. We meet in a storefront in Colorado Springs. It is our sincere prayer that we find a building to house the service center and the church very soon. We know that GOD has the perfect place for us. Each year, we have an appreciation picnic for our military which is growing in popularity. Also, we have a Valentine Banquet for the adults with the church providing child care. Every month we have family game night. The families meet to play games and have good Christian fellowship. In the next two months, we will baptize two and have a baby dedication.

We have Sunday school for all ages and a Children’s Bible Club at our midweek service. We are excited about what GOD is doing here in Colorado Springs.

We have said goodbye to two families. One family is now stationed at Fort Lee and the other at Fort Stewart.

This is one part of the military ministry we do not like! Matthew 1:23

February 10, 2012

Dear Pastors, Prayer Warriors, Supporters, and Friends of AFBM,

“I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.” ~II Samuel 22:4

After closing in prayer at the God Bless America Crusade, a young soldier I had never met approached me “Sergeant Major I think I’m saved!” Within a few minutes, I realized the preacher had brought him to the point of decision and he was ready. We slipped away from the group, went through the scripture and this young man sought forgiveness and salvation from the only one who could provide it. He then stated “I will never be the same.” After a hug and some sweet fellowship, I provided him with a Bible, a church’s name, and a pastor’s name.

Since our last prayer letter and by God’s wonderful grace, He has allowed me to share His gospel and see 45 people saved. I cannot remember a more fruitful time for our shared ministry.

My family and I want to thank you for your faithful prayers and support. You equip us to reach our heroes with the gospel of Christ. It is an honor to stand side by side with all of you in the ministry.

The last couple of months we have been very busy for the Lord. By God’s grace folks were saved and thousands of Scriptures shipped and handed out.

A review of the last two-months includes:

Accepted one new missionary family.

Shipped 1,000 Bibles and handed out 1,300.

Received 2,600 more Bibles from a local church.

Had AFBM’s books audited and received an exemplary report.

Identified two churches outside military bases which needed rescuing. By God’s grace we were able to help one.

Helped 30 returning heroes find a church home.

“Brethren, pray for us.”

Please pray with us:

For Christ to get the pre-imminence in everything we do.

For our soldiers, their families, safety, and coming to a knowledge of their Lord and Savior.

For our family’s health.

For five new supporting churches.

For continued dental work.

For Debbie’s arthritis.

For the families of the 7,500 war dead.

Praise for souls saved.

Praise for the new missionary family.

Praise for the rescued church.

Praise for Doug II who is a junior in college and for Daniel a high school senior.

Praise for our supporters and their faithfulness to our family.

Again, we cannot thank you enough for your love and support. We never take it for granted and know the sacrifices and prayers you share for us. We love and respect you. Our Lord has blessed us and those we’re called to reach through your faithfulness!

We remain your servants for Christ,

Doug, Debbie, DougII, and Daniel Carragher

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Being fully assured of knowing and doing the will of God is a desire of all genuine Christians. A number of years ago a survey was taken to determine what topics people most wanted to hear about in a sermon. From the 5,000 persons who responded, the computer tabulated the “Ten Most Wanted” sermon topics. Number 2 on the list was “How Can I Find God’s Will For My Life?” (No. 1 was “Where Are We in Bible Prophecy?”). George Truett, a former pastor and Bible Scholar from a hundred years ago once said, “To know the will of God is the greatest knowledge; To find the will of God is the greatest discovery; To do the will of God is the greatest achievement.” Jesus was very concerned with doing the will of God. He taught His disciples to pray “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matt. 6:10). In the olive garden, as He faced His final agony, Jesus prayed, “…not my will, but thine, be done.” (Luke 22:42). The apostle Paul encouraged his readers in the same way when he wrote to the Ephesians, “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.” (Eph. 5:17). A person can succeed in every other endeavor in life, but if he fails to learn and follow the will of God, he is a miserable failure.

For the past year, my family and I have experienced this misery first hand. We have seen many doors shut that were previously opened. We been praying for God to show us a clear direction in His ministry; and show us He did! There is not a day without phone calls with information about churches needing websites and graphics. The lack of the before mentioned items have held many churches back from reaching their communities. According to a national survey performed by the Pew Research between Nov 30 and Dec 27, 2009:
74% of American adults (ages 18 and older) use the internet — a slight drop from their survey in April 2009, which did not include Spanish interviews. At that time they found that 79% of English-speaking adults use the internet.
60% of American adults use broadband connections at home
55% of American adults connect to the internet wirelessly, either through a WiFi or WiMax connection via their laptops or through a handheld device like a smart phone.

That is in North America alone. Worldwide there are over one billion internet users. While satan certainly has his hand in the world wide web, we know that God can use the internet for His glory as well. We view the internet as a necessary tool in today’s society.

Perhaps, the groups hit hardest without resources or help with the internet are littles churches outside of military bases and those trying to reach their Spanish communities. It became clear to us that this lack of media is exactly what the Lord has prepared us to provide. As you know, I am bilingual, an army veteran and an Ordained Minister. This combination is exactly what the Lord wanted for us as he prepared us for this ministry. Through much prayer and counsel, God directed us to redefine our ministry.

Beginning immediately, we will become a HELPS ministry to missionaries and churches of like faith with an emphasis on the media ministry. God has blessed me and my family with a talent in this field; and we will now use it for His glory. We believe God can use us to help others build this ministry to reach people that may not be able to be reached at this time.

We ask that you pray along with us, as we, along with our Armed Forces Baptist Missions board director, clearly define our role in this area. We truly seek to do God’s will in our lives and feel this is His leading.

Please contact us with any questions or how we may better serve you.

Very Respectfully,

Cesar E. Rodriguez

“…Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” ~Luke 2:10-11

Dear Pastors, Prayer Warriors, Supporters, and Friends of the Ministry,

My family and I want to start by thanking you for your faithful prayers and support. Also, we want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Christ filled New Year. You are among the greatest gifts the Lord has ever given us.

The last couple of months have been very busy. By God’s grace folks were saved and thousands of Scriptures shipped. A quick highlight of our accomplishments include:

Two more missionary families recruited.

Three missionary families trained.

Bibles distributed in Afghanistan.

Bibles distributed on three stateside bases where our heroes are preparing to deploy.

Completed a base needs analysis identifying the bases with the greatest church needs.

Located over one hundred churches for returning soldiers.

Many are wondering how our support is holding up during these tight economic times. We have, over the last couple months, received a few letters notifying us about support changes. Several churches have lowered our support and one has dropped us.

However, we continue to look to our Lord and trust in His provision. Thank you for all your sacrifices for our shared ministry. You will never know the difference you make in our lives and in those we’re called to reach. We are well aware of your love for us. We love and respect all of you.

May the Lord Bless your faithfulness,

November 21, 2011
Dear Pastors, Prayer Warriors, Supporters, and Friends of the Ministry,

We, at Armed Forces Baptist Missions, thank God for your faithful support and prayers. Each of you are a blessing to us. Thank you, and may the Lord bless your faithfulness.

Our dear friends, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Christ filled New Year.

“Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given…”

Many of the two million, six hundred thousand men and women of our armed forces will celebrate Christmas in faraway places. It is our prayer, that through our shared ministry, they will realize that a Child was born and a Son was given for them. In the past twelve months, through our combined ministries, many have come to the knowledge of our Lord and Savior. Please join us in prayer that many more will come to Christ for salvation.

In 2011, God graciously allowed us to reach the milestone of seven hundred and fifty thousand Scriptures shipped to our men and women around the world! Amazingly, last month on Delta Airlines, a pastor met a soldier with an AFBM Bible in his hands. When asked where he had picked up the Bible, the soldier replied, “It was passed out in Afghanistan in the day room.” The pastor asked him if he knew what was in the Bible and the soldier replied, “While receiving training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, I was invited to a Servicemen Center, and I was saved!” We praise the Lord that he received an AFBM Bible and was led to the Lord by an AFBM missionary thousands of miles apart. Indeed, the Lord has blessed our ministry – and we can see the results!

Since our last prayer letter, the Lord blessed us with two new missionary families. One represents us in colleges and churches around the country, and the other serves as a missionary in Afghanistan – reaching out to the front lines. We are hopeful for several supporting churches to financially support this “front-line” ministry in Afghanistan. We need to buy Bibles, coffee, snacks, and Sunday School curriculum to send monthly to him. If you are interested in supporting this vital ministry please contact the AFBM home office. We will never be able to share names or locations, but the Lord knows them personally. You will receive prayer letters and reports so you can track the effectiveness of your sacrificial investment in America’s finest.

Our Asian Director, Dr. Jim Taylor, is the pastor of Victory Baptist Church and president of Victory Baptist Bible College in Gunsan (formerly Kunsan), South Korea. Brother Taylor reports the college recently had five new graduates. They now have students from seven countries (including our military heroes) and are literally preparing students to reach the world. Two recent graduates have started churches and Bible colleges in Myanmar.

We look forward to at least two new churches and Servicemen Centers in 2012.

If you are interested in any of our thirteen missionaries on deputation for meetings or missions’ conferences, contact AFBM.

Again, we are genuinely thankful for your support and prayers.

On behalf of our AFBM family,

Brother Doug

How you can pray for deployed military personnel?

We hear people say, “Pray for our Troops!” But what do we pray for? What, specifically, are their needs?

Here are insights in how to pray for our military:

Pray if they’re not saved that the Lord would send a witness to them and save them.

Pray that he would have the peace of Christ with him—especially if he travels outside of his Forward Operating Base (FOB).

Pray that he will depend on the love of God to keep him from bitterness at others (who needlessly make life difficult on their subordinates especially when they aren’t the most competent leader).

Pray for his spiritual and emotional resiliency so that regardless of what they face, they will be able to be effective in his military role and responsibility.

Pray for protection. “As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever” (Psalm I25:2).

Pray that he will be vigilant if he is called upon to fire upon the enemy. “Blessed be the LORD my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:” (Psalm 144:1).

Pray that the enemy will be turned back. “Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.” (Psalm 40:14).

Pray that he will be fulfilled in his job. Without purpose, time in the combat zone is extremely long and difficult.

Pray that he will resist lowering himself to lower levels of conversations and instead seek to be an example of goodness and righteousness.

Pray that he finds “good and solid” Christian brothers to have fellowship.

Pray that if he struggles or is discouraged, he will seek out his chaplain for wisdom and encouragement.

Pray for the leadership in Platoons, Companies, Battalions, Brigades . . . depending on what level the soldier works. Leadership can make or break a man.

How can you pray for the military home front?

Many prayers are directed to our deployed military personnel, and that is so appreciated, but it is equally important to pray for their loved ones at home. Here are insights provided by military spouses in how to pray:

Pray…for the home front spouse

Pray if they’re not saved that the Lord would send a witness to them and save them.

that they would trust God and that they would be firmly rooted in Christ and the Word of God and draw strength from Him

for joy, hope, endurance, strength, patience, protection and safety

pray against fear, loneliness, fatigue, despair, depression

that support would be present when needed, that friends, family, co-workers, neighbors would rise up and extend assistance and encouragement

Pray…for their marriage

for loyalty and commitment in their marriage, and that their relationship would have trust

that their love would grow stronger during the time apart

pray against temptation or inappropriate relationships

for a healthy way to fill the hours left empty that would have been spent with their spouse

Pray…for their children

that they would be strong for their children and would have wisdom and discernment in parenting

that children would learn how to cope with the deployment (fears, anxieties,

sadness) and learn how to express themselves

that schools would be understanding and helpful

And keep praying following the deployment!

Pray for the time of re-integration. After the happy reunion, the period of adjustment can be tough. The whole family has been affected/changed by the deployment.

It may be a time of dealing with unresolved issues.

The deployed parent needs to fit back into the home that has managed independently without him/her for a period of time. Parental/spousal responsibilities may shift.

Sometimes a return home is followed by a move to a new location. Please keep praying!

What you can pray for parents of military personnel?

1. Pray if they’re not saved that the Lord would send a witness to them and save them.

2. Strong faith to entrust their son or daughter into God’s hands no matter the outcome. (Having no control of a child’s well being is extremely tough.)

3. That the fear regarding their child’s situation is replaced daily with God’s peace. (When communication is minimal anxiety is at it’s highest.)

4. They are able to physically rest and restore themselves in order to function on an everyday basis. (Insomnia is extremely common for these parents.)

5. They are able to accept their child’s decision to enlist. (When an enlistment is not the parents’ first choice or if it was a complete surprise, anger can surface.)

6. They find joy in everyday in the midst of the unknowns. (Severe depression is common with Blue Star Moms.)

7. For them to find creative ways to support their loved one, emotionally, and spiritually, from a distance.

8. That they would remain steadfast and not “loose heart”, but continue in prayer causing them to grow stronger in the Lord.

9. That family and close friends understand or at least accept and not criticize the roller coaster of emotions. (Without realizing it, family has the highest ability to hurt and isolate Blue Star Parents.)

10. For wisdom to know how to encourage their son or daughter throughout each stage of their enlistment. Knowing if they are to say something, what to say, when to say it and how to say it. (Some parents say too much too soon, others don’t say anything because they are unsure how their child will react.)

11. They be able to adapt to and accept the changes in themselves as well as their child that have occurred during their child’s enlistment. (Changes may be positive, like after boot camp; or negative, like after a deployment. Either way life will never be the same for any of them. The entire family has a “new normal” to adjust to.)

12. That they be led to those that will support and encourage them possibly by joining or starting a support group for other military families. (It’s extremely lonely for Blue Star Parents if they don’t have others in similar situations to share their hearts and the everyday uncertainties.)

Also, something I do for those I’m praying for is ask God to lead me to a passage of Scripture that I can insert their name into and make it a personal prayer for them. Here are a couple great scriptures to claim.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. ~ I Peter 5:7

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him. ~Psalm 28:7
